Ensuring all of our nation’s young people

have equal access to opportunity

About MBK/GEN

MBSK Michigan

My Brother's and Sister's Keeper Michigan (MBSK Michigan) is a network of Michigan communities and partners committed to collective action to  improve outcomes for Black and Brown youth across six milestones.

My Brother's and Sister's Keeper Michigan is a Community of Practice Network building collective power to transform policy at the local, state and national levels. Members of the Community of Practice are encouraged to share expertise and serve as facilitators of the ongoing work of policy and systems transformation, which is the primary objective of the MBK Challenge.

MBSK Michigan is an officially certified community in the national My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance. MBK Certification recognizes our community’s deep commitment to addressing opportunity gaps for boys and young men of color. It reflects years of effort building aligned infrastructure, documenting our impact, and working collaboratively to create lasting change.

We are deeply grateful to the many local and statewide partners and young people who have led and supported this work for more than a decade.

HISTORY

In September 2014, former President Obama issued a challenge to cities, towns, counties and tribes across the country to become “MBK Communities.” This challenge represents a call to action for all members of our communities, and mayors in particular, as they often sit at the intersection of many of the vital forces and structural components needed to enact sustainable change through policy, programs, and partnerships.

MBSK Metro Lansing was one of the first cities to accept President Obama’s MBK Challenge in 2014. The My Brother’s Keeper initiative and 3G Network in Lansing, MI were used as starting points to construct a plan for the Girls Equity Network in Michigan. The MBSK coalition expanded to include targeted outreach to girls and young women of color in 2017.

In 2015, MBSK Michigan became the first state formation in the country. One Love Global has served as the backbone organization for the statewide movement—convening partners, uplifting youth leadership, and advancing policy solutions rooted in equity.
