Angela Waters Austin, Black Lives Matter Lansing
"I am often asked why Black Lives Matter Lansing supports immigration reform and protection of undocumented Americans. The fact that most people are unaware that at this very moment 50,000 Haitians and 4,000 Somalis are facing immediate mass deportation is not by coincidence. By design, the face of immigration is broadly painted with one stroke when the reality is that immigrants and undocumented Americans come in all colors, including white.
"Today, on May Day, Black descendants of slaves, Black immigrants, and Black refugees gather at the Michigan State Capitol for May 1 — Lansing — Day Without Immigrants and Their Friends with our Indigenous Latinx family and our Brown immigrant family and our white friends to defy the three evils of racism, capitalism, and militarism. When the USA welcomes those whose ancestors built this nation on our backs with our blood, sweat, and tears, and embraces Black and Brown immigrants and Black and Brown people seeking asylum the way it welcomes and protects white immigrants — only then can we believe that US immigration policy is anti-racist."
